NFB 2001 Everest Expedition


Objective:

The students will recall the mission of the NFB 2001 Everest Expedition, the climbing team members, and information about the entire expedition.

1. Introduce the Mount Everest experience, Mr. Cherilla, and the climbing team.  Read introduction to the class either orally or have each student read it independently.
2. After reading the introduction have the students locate Phoenix, Arizona on a map of the United States.
3. Recap the important points.

A. The teacher's name is Mr. Cherilla.
B. He is from Osborn Middle School, Phoenix, Arizona.
C. The names and profession of each climbing team member.
D. The team's flight path to Bangkok, Thailand and from Bangkok, Thailand to Kathmandu, Nepal.

Independent Practice:

1. The students will recall the teacher, Mr. Cherilla, and the climbing team members.
2. The students will locate Kathmandu and trace the flight path from Los Angeles, California to Kathmandu, Nepal via Bangkok, Thailand.

2. Using a map of the United States, locate each team member's state and hometown city.
3. Draw a map of the team's flight path to Kathmandu. List the major countries, bodies of water, and continents they fly over.

Reading and Questions:

You are about to embark on an exciting educational experience that will take you halfway around the world to a small country is South Asia known as Nepal. This learning experience will allow you to participate in some of the latest internet technologies using maps, video, and animated design to learn about the people and culture of Nepal as well as virtually follow a team of mountaineers on an adventurous climb up the world's highest mountain, Mount Everest.

You will begin by following the team's flight from the United States to the capital of Nepal, Kathmandu. From Kathmandu, you will trek with the team through small villages leading up to the majestic Himalayan region. The Nepal Himalayan region includes eight of the world's highest mountains, all of which stand more than 25,000 feet high. The climbers will take you on a trek into Everest base camp where they will begin a four-week process of preparing for their summit attempt.

The teacher on the expedition is Mr. Cherilla. He is a 7th and 8th grade physical education teacher at Osborn Middle School in Phoenix, Arizona. Mr. Cherilla has been preparing to be a part of the expedition to Mount Everest since August of 2000.

Before we move on, let's meet Mr. Cherilla.

"Hello to all students and everyone else out there following along!  I'm excited about the opportunity to share my dream to be a part of a team climbing the highest mountain in the world with you and take you on an adventurous learning experience throughout parts of Nepal, the Everest Himalayan region, and on up Mt. Everest. Climbing Mount Everest is all about teamwork, inspiration, hard work, and fulfilling a dream. If there is one thing I'd like this climb to do for you, it would be to show you that you too can pursue your dreams through the willingness to work hard at it. Of course, I want you to learn about the people, culture, and geography of Nepal, but I hope that the climb will inspire you to make your dream actually happen.

"Now let's meet the team." (Please go to https://2001everest.com/ under the team section.) Our team will depart from Los Angeles Airport on March 23 for Bangkok, Thailand. We will spend the night in Bangkok and fly the next morning to Kathmandu, Nepal.
